The Sterling Spoons

Other universities chose lions, eagles, or bears: animals that have never once helped anyone eat soup. Sterling chose differently. Sterling chose refinement. Sterling chose a utensil with a 184-year unbeaten streak in sitting perfectly still on white tablecloths.

“At Sterling, we don't just raise the bar. We polish it.”

The Mascot Himself

Meet Thurston Howell IV

Forged, allegedly, from a single ingot of Virginia sterling in 1842, Thurston is the fourth of his name. The first two retired to a velvet-lined drawer in the President's office; the third was lost at sea in 1964 during what the family will only describe as “a three-hour tour.” He holds honorary degrees in Table Setting (summa cum laude), Reflective Studies, and Tea (with distinction), and has never once been photographed with a wrinkle.

His duties include appearing at the Placesetting, judging the First Polish, comforting students during finals by gleaming reassuringly, and maintaining what the athletics department describes as “a frankly intimidating level of posture.” His only known weakness is the dishwasher, which he regards the way sailors regard the open sea.

Sacred & Extremely Binding

Traditions of the Spoon

  • The First Polish

    On move-in day, every first-year receives a tarnished spoon recovered from the dining hall and polishes it to a mirror shine by candlelight. You are not officially enrolled until you can see your own potential in it. Registrar-verified.

  • The Midnight Stirring

    The night before finals, the entire student body gathers on the Quad to stir tea counterclockwise in unison. Scholars dispute whether it improves grades. Scholars have never once skipped it.

  • The Placesetting

    Our annual rivalry game against the Forkton Tines. The winner keeps the Gravy Boat, a trophy of indeterminate age that no one is allowed to wash. Sterling has held it for 31 consecutive years, which Forkton attributes to 'scooping.' Correct.

  • Commencement Clink

    Graduates do not toss caps. They raise 4,000 teaspoons and clink them once, in unison. The note produced is a perfect A. Naturally.

A Brief, Gleaming History

184 years of applied shine

  1. 1842

    Founders survive their first Virginia winter with a single surviving utensil: one very good spoon. A university is built around it.

  2. 1874

    First recorded use of the cheer 'Scoop, there it is.' Historians remain defensive about the anachronism.

  3. 1923

    The Spoon becomes the official mascot, defeating 'The Fighting Ladles' by a single trustee vote.

  4. 1968

    The Spork Incident. We do not discuss the Spork Incident.

  5. 2003

    Thurston Howell IV assumes the mantle after a nationwide search and one extremely persuasive monocle-free audition.

  6. 2026

    Thurston is voted Best-Dressed Mascot for the 184th consecutive year, an award that has existed for 23 years. He declines to explain.

To be sung fortissimo, pinkies out

“Stir On, Sterling” (official fight song, first verse)

Stir on, Sterling, silver and true,
No fork shall part us, no knife cut through;
We scoop our victories, gleaming and clean;
The politest juggernaut you've ever seen!
